Sometimes your Lightroom presets seem to disappear out of nowhere. You open Lightroom, go to your Presets panel, and suddenly everything is missing.
The good news is that your presets are usually still there. In most cases, the problem comes from hidden preset groups, sync issues, the wrong Adobe account, incompatible preset files, or catalog-related settings.
This guide will help you figure out what caused the issue and how to restore missing presets in Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Desktop, and Lightroom Mobile.
Why Your Lightroom Presets May Be Missing
Missing presets usually come down to visibility, sync, compatibility, or catalog settings.
Your preset group may be hidden inside Lightroom, you may be signed into the wrong Adobe account, the preset file may not match your Lightroom version, or your presets may be stored in a different catalog or location.
Sometimes the preset imports successfully, but Lightroom still does not show it in the Presets panel.
The exact cause depends on where the problem happened: Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Desktop, or Lightroom Mobile.
Start with the section that matches your Lightroom version.
Fix Missing Presets in Lightroom Classic
If you use Lightroom Classic, start with these checks first. Most missing preset issues in Classic are caused by visibility settings, catalog settings, or compatibility problems.
Check if your preset groups are hidden
Sometimes your presets are still installed, but the preset group is unchecked and hidden from the Presets panel.
Open the Develop module, then find the Presets panel on the left side. Click the + icon and choose Manage Presets.
Make sure all your preset groups are checked.

Enable Show Partially Compatible Develop Presets
Some presets may disappear because Lightroom thinks they are not fully compatible with your current image or camera profile.
Go to Edit > Preferences on Windows or Lightroom Classic > Preferences on Mac.
Open the Presets tab and enable Show Partially Compatible Develop Presets.
This often fixes presets that were imported successfully but do not appear while editing.

Check Store Presets With This Catalog
This setting causes a lot of confusion, especially after switching catalogs or moving to a new computer.
If enabled, Lightroom stores presets inside a specific catalog instead of the global presets folder. That means opening another catalog can make your presets look like they disappeared.
Go to Preferences > Presets and check whether Store Presets With This Catalog is enabled.
If you recently changed catalogs, this is one of the first things to inspect.

Check your presets folder manually
If nothing worked yet, check whether your preset files still exist on your computer.
Most modern presets use .xmp files.
Typical preset folder locations:
Mac~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings
WindowsC:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
If your preset files are still there, they are probably not deleted. Lightroom is simply not displaying them correctly.
If your preset files are missing or you need to reinstall them from scratch, follow our guide on how to install Lightroom presets on desktop.
Fix Missing Presets in Lightroom Desktop
If you use the cloud-based Lightroom Desktop app, missing presets are usually caused by sync issues, import problems, or missing profiles.
Check the Presets panel
Start by opening any photo in edit mode and clicking the Presets button.
Sometimes the presets are there but hidden inside another group, especially under Yours or custom folders.
Make sure you are checking the full presets panel and not just Adobe’s default preset categories.
Re-import your presets correctly
If your presets still do not appear, try importing them again.
Click File > Import Profiles & Presets and select your preset files.
Most Lightroom Desktop presets use .xmp files. If you try importing the wrong file type, Lightroom may accept the import but still fail to show the preset properly.

Check for missing profiles
This is one of the most overlooked reasons presets seem to disappear.
Some presets rely on specific camera profiles or creative profiles. If that required profile is missing, the preset may import successfully but never appear correctly inside Lightroom.
This happens often with older preset packs or presets downloaded from different Lightroom ecosystems.
If a preset says it imported but you still cannot see or use it, a missing profile could be the reason.
Fix Missing Presets in Lightroom Mobile
If your presets are missing in Lightroom Mobile, the problem is usually related to your Adobe account, cloud sync, or app reinstall.
Check that you’re signed into the correct Adobe account
This happens often when people use more than one Adobe login.
If you have multiple Adobe accounts or accidentally signed in with a different email, your synced presets may not appear.
Open Lightroom Mobile and check the account currently connected to the app.
Make sure it is the same Adobe account you originally used to import or sync your presets.
If you need to import everything again from scratch, follow our guide on how to install presets on iPhone.
Check the Yours or User Presets folder
Sometimes presets are still there but simply hidden inside another preset group.
Open any photo, tap Presets, then look inside Yours, User Presets, or any custom preset folder you created.
Many users think their presets disappeared when they were simply moved to another folder.
Check your cloud sync status
If your presets were synced from desktop, cloud sync must be working properly.
A paused sync or failed sync can prevent presets from appearing on mobile.
Check the cloud icon or sync status inside Lightroom and make sure everything is fully synced.
If sync is stuck, restarting the app or signing out and back in may help.
Did you reinstall the app?
Be careful with this one.
If you deleted and reinstalled Lightroom Mobile before your presets finished syncing to Adobe Cloud, some locally stored presets may be gone permanently.
That is why we always recommend keeping a backup of your original preset files, especially for purchased preset packs.
If you still have the original preset files, you can simply import them again.
If you use Android, you can also follow our guide on how to install presets on Android.
Why Lightroom Says “Already Imported” but You Still Can’t See Your Presets
This is frustrating because Lightroom may show a successful import message, but the preset still does not appear in the Presets panel.
In most cases, this happens for one of these reasons:
- The preset was imported into a hidden group
- The preset is incompatible with your Lightroom version
- The preset depends on a missing profile
- You imported the wrong file format
- The preset is only partially compatible with the current photo
This is especially common when importing older .lrtemplate presets into newer Lightroom versions or when using presets designed for desktop on mobile.
If Lightroom says the import worked, that usually means the file itself was accepted.
The problem is usually visibility or compatibility, not the import itself.
How to Avoid Losing Your Lightroom Presets Again
Once you recover your presets, it is worth taking a few minutes to protect them from future issues.
Keep a backup of your original preset files in a safe folder on your computer or cloud storage. This makes recovery much easier if Lightroom crashes, a sync fails, or you move to a new device.
If you use Lightroom Classic, exporting or backing up your catalog regularly can also help prevent missing preset issues.
If you use Lightroom Mobile, avoid uninstalling the app before confirming everything is fully synced to your Adobe Cloud account.
For purchased presets, we also recommend keeping the original download ZIP file so you can quickly reinstall everything if needed.
If you want to test whether the issue comes from a broken or incompatible preset file, try importing a clean preset pack first. You can download our free Lightroom presets and use them as a quick compatibility check.
Final Thoughts
If your Lightroom presets disappeared, there is a good chance they are still there.
Most missing preset issues come down to hidden preset groups, sync problems, compatibility issues, or catalog settings rather than actual data loss.
Start with the version of Lightroom you use, follow the relevant fixes, and work through them one step at a time.
In most cases, you can get your presets back without starting from scratch.
